"2011 MFA Juried Exhibition" @ First Street Gallery

With the majority of local galleries showing experienced and established artists, you may occasionally feel the need to balance your art intake by actively seeking out some raw not-yet-refined talents. That pursuit may take you to a more emerging scene like Brooklyn, or you can fill that void in Chelsea when there's a group show for MFA students - like the one currently at First Street Gallery. The exhibition, which is said to be the start of an annual tradition, is juried by Susanna Coffey, an artist and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

Artists on display: Gina Adams, Carrie Adams, Martin Arnold, Jamie Bates, Isabelle Day, Andrea Degener, Rebecca George, Clarissa Gerber, Amber Hany, Andrew Hendrixson, Jesse Howell. Erica Kempler, Junsoo Kim, Anne LaFond, Virginia McKinney, Erica Nickol, Virginia Pierrepont, Todd Pospichal, Mackenzie Reynolds, Benjamin Rogers, Samuel Scharf, Jason Thompson, David Titterington and Sarah Stewart Wright.

"Disorderly Conduct" @ Larissa Goldston Gallery

An interesting collection of work that grapples with an array of "aggressive themes" is on display at Larissa Goldston Gallery. You'll see a lady taking a leak, a battered face, monochromatic riffs off movie rape scenes, and some orgiastic sharpie drawing - so there's something for everyone! Artists include: Thomas Brouillette, Mark Fox, Orly Genger, Joey Kötting, David Rathman, Erica Svec and Whitney Van Nes.

Christopher Rodrigues @ RARE Gallery - "...all of you on the good Earth"

Feel like going for a mesmeric rocket ship ride? Instead of risking a bad trip by means of the Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds route, check out the Christopher Rodrigues show at RARE Gallery. Rodrigues presents a series of digitally photoshopped/collaged planets, some of which depict an idyllic paradise, while others are quite unnerving with their intensely lethal environments. For some, this exhibition will make you feel real shitty for not recycling that cup of iced coffee.

Mark Wagner @ Pavel Zoubok Gallery - "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death"

Mark Wagner took a bunch of dollar bills (1,121 to be exact), cut them up (into 81,895 pieces) and made some art (making use of letterpress printing, wood and bronze sculpture, abstract painting and collage). This exhibition - "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death," on display at Pavel Zoubok Gallery - includes a 1/11 scale riff off the Statue of Liberty. There's also one piece consisting of a giant handcrafted QR code. (Spoiler alert: when scanned with your smartphone, this text message is displayed: "Needless to say.")

Pulpo Corporate @ Taché Gallery - "Hidden Drawings"

Here's a look at Pulpo Corporate's (aka Fernando Hereñú) "Hidden Drawings," the Argentinian artist's current exhibition at Taché Gallery. These peculiar illustrations focus on themes of childhood trauma and hidden emotion. Pulpo, who worked at Cartoon Network & Adult Swim prior to starting an independent career as an artist and art director, describes his style as "a mixture of...1970s American Comix, the Asian classic fine art and the classic art Noveau paintings."

Jill Greenberg @ CLAMPART - "Glass Ceiling"

A bunch of fit women in a pool sounds kinda sexy.  Now picture them all, still in the water, wearing stilettos...impractical, yet sexier? Jill Greenberg's "Glass Ceiling" exhibition at CLAMPART should motivate you to contemplate society's confusing attitude towards female sexuality. Here's a look at these surreal underwater photographs...

Dirk Janssens @ CATM Chelsea: "Made In Wonderland" (until July 24)

If you're feeling a little blue and in desperate need of a pick-me-up, CATM Chelsea has a cure that involves neither pills nor narcotics. This unique anti-depressant comes in the form of Dirk Janssens' "Made In Wonderland" collection. Janssen accurately calls his work LoveArt. His works bestow compliments on the viewer, such as "You are made of stars!" and "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." Goths may want to stay away from this show, but if you embrace the vibe, a walk through the gallery could feel just like attending a jazzercise class led by Richard Simmons.

Lucky for the heartsick: CATM recently announced that they have extended Janssens' exhibition, due to popular demand, until July 24.
